POSITION SUMMARY:

Lead and support the development of innovative packaging solutions or design changes of existing packaging from initial concept and development to qualification and final release to production for new and existing products and components. Emphasis will be placed on developing cost-effective packaging solutions that protect finished goods, subassemblies and components from handling, storage, and shipping damage as it progresses through the company supply chain which comprises of domestic and international shipments by all modes of transportation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general direction and in accordance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local laws/regulations and Jacuzzi Brands procedures and guidelines, this position:

  • Function as the packaging Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the organization.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional New Product Development and Sustaining teams to design, develop and implement new packaging or facilitate changes to existing packaging as needed to reduce cost, improve quality, and decrease customer complaints and warranty claims resulting from in-transit product damage.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to Operations, Engineering and Commercial teams.
  • Work closely with Supply Chain, Sourcing, Engineering and Quality teams in evaluating and selecting suppliers of purchased packaging materials and procuring samples to conduct feasibility testing for potential usage.
  • Ensure outer packaging labeling and marking for incoming and outgoing materials, components and finished goods comply with applicable domestic and international regulatory requirements.
  • Identify appropriate methods for conducting suitable real-time and simulated testing of packaging configurations and solutions.
  • Create test protocols to conduct functional, compatibility, stability and transportation testing of packaging materials, boxes, and containers.
  • Analyze test data and draft associated test reports for review and approval by functional approvers.
  • Establish internal and external quality and performance metrics for packaging, and measure/trend performance to established CTQs/KPIs.
  • Develop purchased part qualification, first article and ongoing inspection requirements for new and revised packaging materials, boxes and containers that satisfy company requirements for acceptance and confidence.
  • Address packaging-related non-conformances, customer complaints and warranty claims and implement the necessary corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Communicate directly with and travel to distributor locations as needed to investigate and resolve packaging non-conformances.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities for packaging to improve performance and reduce cost.
  • Keep abreast of new packaging technologies and regulatory requirements and disseminate this information to the appropriate members of the organization as warranted.
  • Maintain packaging performance data and analyze trends of packaging non-conformances and warranty claims.
  • Responsible for communicating business related issues or opportunities to next management level.
  • Performs other duties assigned as needed

REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study required
  • 5 – 7 years of experience as a Packaging Engineer
  • Master's degree is preferred

The Packaging Engineer, supports packaging component and assembly processes through design, specification, controlling and testing in the manufacturing and conversion processes, ultimately resulting in packing fit for purpose.
